CAPPA Canada Lactation Educator Certification Workshop (Halifax/NS)

Trainer: Attie Sandink, RN, IBCLC, CCE, RLC

Dates: Apr. 19-20, 2012

Teaching Breastfeeding classes: Can we stimulate the return of the natural instincts of the Baby/Mother dyad?

This course has been derived from the principles of the 20 Hour WHO/UNICEF Lactation Management Course, which defines and examines the Baby Friendly Initiative in Canada and internationally as it promotes, protects and supports breastfeeding. Pre or post workshop study will cover this aspect of the course. Understanding BFHI is a helpful pre-requisite for taking this course.

Workshop will include the latest scientific data and research related to anatomy, physiology and the biological norms of breastfeeding, Kangaroo Mother Care, the benefits of Skin to Skin, Baby Led latching and the baby's role in breastfeeding. As well, participants will be encouraged to think outside the traditional box to make breastfeeding much easier and fun from the start. Participants will explore the concepts that effective lactation education should include; more than simply teaching the basics of position and latch.

Knowing how to teach Breastfeeding Classes is as important as knowing what to teach parents-to-be about breastfeeding and how to support them in the best way possible. Therefore, participants will be encouraged to implement teaching and counseling strategies. Adult learning principles, group discussion, counseling skills will be included. A variety of videos and visual aids will be used to explore best practice, practical and up to date information about breastfeeding. As we move through a variety of videos and visual aids each participant can evaluate what they would like to use in their classes.

Who should attend: This workshop is valuable for professionals such as Doctors, Midwives, Registered Nurses, Doulas, Chiropractors, Naturopaths, Dieticians, Nutritionists, Massage therapist, or mothers giving peer support etc. and especially those who may want to pursue a career as a Certified Lactation Educator. For more information, please contact Attie at asandink@cogeco.ca or CAPPA Canada Head Office.
